Admission requirements

The minimum admission requirement to the PhD is a master's degree, a bachelor's degree with first or second class honours or equivalent qualification.


Local Students

Before your application for admission to a research degree can proceed, you must have a potential supervisor arranged.

Students who have already contacted a potential supervisor will need to submit an application consisting of:

  1. A completed current application form (download application form, PDF 140 KB)
  2. All the Essential Documentation for all Applicants as listed in the Checklist for Local Students (download checklist, PDF 84 KB)
  3. All the Additional Documentation for Research Applicants as listed in the Checklist for Local Students.

International Students

Before your application for admission to a research degree can proceed, you must have a potential supervisor arranged.

Applications must be directed to the International Office. To make a direct application to the University of Sydney, you must:

  1. Complete an International Postgraduate Research Application Form (download application form, PDF 656 KB)
  2. Utilise the instructions on the Making an Application Page
  3. Attach all necessary documents (including original or certified copies of academic transcripts, English language tests results and any other supporting documents), and;
  4. Forward all documents to:
